Pakistan: Community Voices Bulletin Monsoon Floods, Edition #1 (December 2022)

Welcome to the very first edition of our Community Voices Bulletin. This is an inter-agency community feedback platform that shares views, opinions and insights collected from communities affected by the monsoon floods in Pakistan.

As identified in the 2022 Floods Response Plan, the Pakistan Humanitarian Country Team’s Accountability to Affected People (AAP)/Community Engagement (CE) Working Group is committed to ensuring that affected people are at the centre of the humanitarian response, that collective mechanisms are in place to ensure that affected people can provide feedback on their own priorities and concerns around humanitarian action, and that these are considered and addressed accordingly in a meaningful way.

Community Voices facilitates dialogue between disaster-affected people, the Government of Pakistan and humanitarian responders who are supporting the effective delivery of assistance. Community Voices captures key data and information collected through community consultations, including focus group discussions (FGDs), key informant interviews (KIIs) and other assessments which are conducted collectively by the Government of Pakistan and humanitarian responders.

This edition of Community Voices presents the priority needs of affected communities five months after the onset of catastrophic flooding across Pakistan. It reflects the views of affected communities on the humanitarian assistance they have received to date, as well as collective efforts by the AAP/CE Working Group to improve the response based on the voices of the community.

Overview of 2022 Monsoon Floods Heavy rains and a combination of riverine, urban, and flash flooding have led to an unprecedented climate-induced disaster in Pakistan since June 2022, causing widespread fatalities, killing livestock, and damaging and destroying public and private infrastructure across the country. Large parts of Sindh remain inundated with water, as well as some areas in other provinces.

Led by the Government of Pakistan and humanitarian responders, the 2022 Floods Response Plan which was launched on 30 August 2022 and revised on 04 October 2022, urgently seeks US$816 million to provide prioritised multi-sectoral aid and protection to 9.5 million people in affected areas of Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and Sindh until 31 May 2023.
