Humanitarian situation

The humanitarian situation in Burkina Faso has deteriorated sharply over the past year. On the second half of the month of February 2020, nearly 765,000 people had been forced to flee their homes due to the violence.

Today more than 56% of internally displaced people (IDPs) are without any or adequate shelter. The month of January 2020 saw worsening violence against civilians, mainly in the provinces of Soum, Sanmatenga, Seno and Sourou, which has contributed to new displacements in these locations.

The number of people in need of humanitarian assistance has increased from 1.5 million people in December 2019 to 2.2 million in January 2020. According to the Humanitarian Needs Overview, in 2020, 948,000 people are in need of protection and 1.5 million people will depend on humanitarian aid for access to healthcare services.

From the data available, 318,000 students are without access to education due to the closure of 2,410 schools due to insecurity. In response, the humanitarian community is targeting 1.8 million people to receive multisectoral humanitarian assistance in 2020 and calling for US$ 312 million in funding.
