Overview of population movements (December 2022)

As of 31 December 2022, the total number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the Central African Republic (CAR) was estimated at 516, 538 individuals. This represents a decrease of 1,578 people (less than 1 per cent) compared to the month of November when the number of IDPs was estimated at 518,116. 28 per cent of these IDPs were living in dedicated sites and 72 per cent in host families.

In December 2022, there was a preponderance of spontaneous returns (3,458) over new displacements (1,880). The new displacements mainly took place in areas affected by violence and atrocities by armed men, as well as incidents related to transhumance (theft of livestock and subsequent reprisals) in the Ouaka and Haut-Mbomou prefectures. Spontaneous returns were mainly reported in Ippy in the Ouaka Prefecture following an improvement in the security situation.
