SITUATION OVERVIEW

On 23 March a member of the Mararit tribe was killed in the Tandulti area, Ag Geneina locality, West Darfur State. A group of Mararit tribe members tracked down the alleged two killers (Arab) and stoned them to death. In retaliation, Arab nomads mobilized and attacked Tandulti town on 23 and 24 March in revenge for the stoning of their tribe members.

During these events, six people were reportedly killed and eight injured, according to the International Organization for Migration Displacement Tracking Matrix (IOM DTM). About 59 homes were reportedly burned and looted, and about 30,000 people—mostly women, children, and elderly—have reportedly fled across the border into Chad, according to local sources. Joint security forces—Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and Sudan Police Forces (SPF)—were deployed to the area to contain the situation.

The Governor (Wali) of West Darfur and the state security committee visited Tandulti to try to de-escalate the situation. According to local sources, the security situation in Tandulti remains tense as mobilizations continue around the Tandulti and Adkiokng areas.
